So while shopping for a great deal on a used car, our friend Vickie finds an incredible deal on a used Chevy Equinox but the thing is, the car has been in a hail damage storm and is in need of some paintless dent repair.
Vickie looks past the dents and focuses on the price, which is really several thousand dollars below the next best price at another dealer. She decides to buy the car with the dents and it is what's considered an "as is " purchase.
What Vickie didnt realize is that the cost of repairing the dents in her newly purchased car will go with the car when she looks to sell the car in a few years. This is known as future loss of value.
The cost to repair the dents in her car is rightly $5,000. This amount will be deducted from the future value of the car when she trades it in or sells outright. The bottom line here is this, use caution and get repair estimates BEFORE you consider buying a hail damage car.
USA Today Suggests nearly 60% of auto outdoor claims were attributed from hail and hail storms. Also NOAA or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports up to one billion dollars a year in storm damage. SO the paintless dent industry is a billion dollar a year business. That is a lot of dent repair to keep up on.

Winters are cold in western PA thats for sure. One thing you can count on in a cold climate is no thunderstorms. The dry air combined with low temperatures mean mother nature cannot brew up a hail storm that throws objects at your car.
Penn State wrote an article on the topic just last year. Highlighting the finer points of how a weather system develops and what it means when there is significant weather activity in your area.
Here in Pittsburgh, we have had significant hail storms just about every summer since at least 1998. Now our weather events pale in comparison to those in the tornado alley, as we are on the upper edge of that path. However we get just enough damage from hail storms that our area is within the hail damage rider category.
In 2012 North Versailles, PA and other surrounding communities were affected with so much hail damage to their homes and autos that new insured drivers now need additional coverage to protect from hail storms. hail damage is real in our community and we need to be ready to protect against it.
First things first, do NOT try and shield your car or truck during a hail storm. you can be seriously injured. What you can do is park under a canopy or in a garage. Look for overpasses or awnings to seek shelter. Pull over when its safe and wait it out. Its why we have insurance.

Our client called and scheduled this repair in Bethel Park, PA just after the new year. We arrived onsite and removed the dent in the driveway in about 1.5 hours. Heres how we did it;
We find a way to get behind the bumper dent, whether its from the tail light, or actually removing part of the bumper which we describe in another blog post where we repaired a honda odyssey.
Next we add massive amounts of heat, then push the bumper from behind. Yes you may be able to do some of this work, but pushing in the right spot and hyper cooling the dent to lock in the released pressure is key to holding the new shape.
Often times there will still be crowns or smiles from the pressure, those too can be reduced by adding more heat, and then holding the crown down while super cooling the panel. Finally we use the actual paintless dent repair method to do any finish work needed on the bumper cover. This involves using our paintless tools to push from behind while maintaining the paint finish.
