Stay hail damage free this year, here is how ...

Winters are cold in western PA thats for sure.  One thing you can count on in a cold climate is no thunderstorms.  The dry air combined with low temperatures mean mother nature cannot brew up a hail storm that throws objects at your car.  

Penn State wrote an article on the topic just last year.  Highlighting the finer points of how a weather system develops and what it means when there is significant weather activity in your area. 

Here in Pittsburgh, we have had significant hail storms just about every summer since at least 1998.  Now our weather events pale in comparison to those in the tornado alley,  as we are on the upper edge of that path.  However we get just enough damage from hail storms that our area is within the hail damage rider category.

In 2012 North Versailles, PA and other surrounding communities were affected with so much hail damage to their homes and autos that new insured drivers now need additional coverage to protect from hail storms.  hail damage is real in our community and we need to be ready to protect against it.

First things first, do NOT try and shield your car or truck during a hail storm.  you can be seriously injured.  What you can do is park under a canopy or in a garage.   Look for overpasses or awnings to seek shelter.  Pull over when its safe and wait it out.  Its why we have insurance.
